Frequently Asked Questions
Helpful information for Sonoma Stack families about bats, field sizes, baseball age, and where to go with questions.
Start Here
Sonoma Stack Baseball families often have questions about equipment, age divisions, field sizes, and what to expect as players move through competitive travel baseball. This page is designed to help parents and players understand a few of the most common topics.
What is the right bat for my player?
The right bat depends on your player’s age, league rules, tournament requirements, and level of play. Different organizations use different bat standards, so families should always confirm what is allowed for their team, age group, and upcoming events.
USA-Approved Bats
USA-approved bats became the standard for Little League and many youth baseball organizations beginning in 2018. These bats are designed to perform more like wood bats while still giving younger players the feel and durability of a metal bat.
USSSA-Approved Bats
USSSA-approved bats are certified by the United States Specialty Sports Association and are marked with a BPF, or Bat Performance Factor. These bats are commonly used in travel baseball and are typically approved through a player’s 13U season, depending on tournament rules.
BBCOR Bats
BBCOR stands for Bat-Ball Coefficient of Restitution. It is the standard used for high school and college baseball and is designed to make non-wood bats perform more like wood bats. BBCOR bats are the standard for players 14U and older.
Wood Bats
Wood bats come in many shapes, weights, and models. They are excellent training tools because they help players learn barrel control, improve contact quality, and find the sweet spot more consistently.
What size field does my player compete on?
Field dimensions change as players get older. As players progress, the mound moves farther away and the basepaths get longer, helping prepare athletes for the next level of play.
46-foot pitching distance and 65-foot basepaths. For reference, traditional Little League uses 46/60 dimensions.
50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot basepaths.
55-foot pitching distance and 80-foot basepaths.
60-foot, 6-inch pitching distance and 90-foot basepaths.
What is my player’s baseball age?
Travel baseball age can be different from Little League age. For USSSA travel baseball, the season begins on August 1. A player’s baseball age is based on their age on May 1 of that same calendar year.
A player’s Little League age may differ from their travel baseball age, especially if the player was born between May 1 and August 31.
